Rowton Castle Wedding Open Day: Falling in Love With a Heritage Venue
I attended their Summer Evening Wedding Open Day, and from the moment I turned off the country road, I knew I was about to experience something special. The sun was beginning to dip, the air was warm, and the Shropshire countryside was glowing in that soft golden haze that makes everything feel a little more romantic.
First Impressions
There’s plenty of parking, and everything is perfectly signposted, so you never feel lost or rushed. The walk to the front door was a sensory delight, the scent of the rose covered garden wall, lavender bushes in full bloom brushing against my legs, and little bumblebees working away happily. It felt like stepping into a romantic English garden from a bygone era.
At the entrance, the fountain was in full swing cool droplets catching the sunlight and misting the air just enough to feel refreshing on a hot summer evening. It set the tone beautifully, calm and elegant.
Inside, we were greeted by the wonderful Rowton Castle team, and I mean wonderful. Many of them have worked at the castle for decades (some nearly 30 years!), and that tells you everything you need to know about the heart of this place. Staff don’t stay somewhere for decades unless it’s special. They felt like a family, and they treated us like guests in their home.
Exploring the Castle
We were given access to all the rooms, allowing us to wander freely and soak up the grandeur of this Grade II‑listed 17th‑century castle. Rowton is steeped in history, high ceilings, ornate fireplaces, heritage wallpaper, and architectural details that make you stop and stare. Yet it never feels intimidating. It feels warm, lived in, and enchanting.
One thing I noticed
immediately was the air conditioning. In a historic venue, this is rare and an
absolute blessing during our increasingly warm English summers. It kept every the
main areas cool, comfortable, and wedding ready making sure that no Bride or
Groom would suffer on their wedding day.
As I walked through the castle, I felt completely at peace. Everyone was warm and welcoming, no question felt silly, and every staff member had time for you. It’s the kind of place where you instantly feel looked after.

One of my favourite parts of the open day was being able to speak directly with the Rowton Castle team, the people who bring the venue to life. Their answers added a whole new layer of meaning to the experience and helped me understand why couples fall in love with this place so quickly.
What makes Rowton Castle stand out as an exclusive‑use venue
Couples have exclusive use of the castle and its grounds, so it genuinely becomes their private space for the day. It feels grand and historic, yet still warm, welcoming and personal, a balance that’s surprisingly rare.
But what struck me most was what they said about the team. Many of the staff have been here for years, some for decades, and they’re with each couple from the very first visit right through to breakfast the morning after the wedding. That continuity means everything runs seamlessly behind the scenes, allowing couples to relax and simply enjoy time with their family and friends.
What couples love the most
Another highlight couples adore is being able to extend the celebration with guests staying overnight and coming together again for breakfast the next morning. It turns the wedding into a full experience, not just a single day.

Rowton Castle has lived many lives. For much of its history, it was a family home, and they still have old photographs showing everyday moments, including tennis being played on the back lawns. Later, it became a school for blind students, and every so often former pupils return to visit. The team said these visits are always incredibly special.
It reminded me that Rowton isn’t just a venue. It’s a place with a soul.

Ceremony & Private Moments
I asked about private moments after the ceremony, something I think is so important for couples. Without hesitation, I was told that Rowton prepares drinks for the bride and groom and takes them to a quiet, secluded part of the castle so they can breathe, be together, and soak in the fact that they’re officially married. That level of attention to detail is exactly what sets Rowton apart.
Their ceremony spaces are breath taking, from elegant indoor rooms to the Linden Belvedere, their outdoor ceremony structure nestled within the gardens. It’s romantic, historic, and feels like a scene from a period drama.
The Grounds
The gardens are immaculate, manicured lawns, heritage planting, and winding pathways that make you feel like you’re exploring a secret garden. The atmosphere was relaxed, historic, and filled with nature. At one point, cows from the neighbouring field wandered over to say hello, which was such a charming countryside moment.
Rowton Castle is truly an all‑season venue. Warm and cosy inside the castle walls for autumn and winter weddings. Bright, floral, and expansive for spring and summer celebrations. And with the Linden Belvedere for outdoor ceremonies, you have the option of saying “I do” surrounded by nature.
Outside, the bars were serving a multitude of drinks, and the outdoor pizza oven was in full swing. I spoke to one of the chefs who recommended the roasted mushroom, smoked cheddar, garlic and butter parsley pizza as apparently it's one of the staffs favourites. Naturally, I had to try it… and it was divine. It would absolutely be part of my evening food if I were getting married here.
Food and Drink
One thing that really stood
out to me during the open day was how beautifully Rowton Castle approaches food
and drink. Whilst catering isn’t included within the venue hire, it’s one of
the only additional elements couples need to consider and honestly, it’s clear
why. Their Food & Beverage team take dining seriously, and it shows in
every detail.
The menu spans everything from elegant canapés to fully served courses, signature drinks to cocktails, and even wood fired pizza (which I can personally confirm is scrumptious). Whether you imagine a refined three course wedding breakfast or a relaxed, alfresco evening spread, Rowton’s team can shape the perfect menu for your day.
Golden Hour Romance
The Tower House
The Tower House, where the bride, bridesmaids and/or family can stay the night before, has been transformed into a tranquil, stylish retreat. It’s decorated in a refined, modern‑English style, think upscale countryside boutique meets serene wellness hideaway. It feels like a home from home, but elevated.
There’s a mini kitchen stocked with essentials (including champagne flutes, of course), and a continental breakfast is included, delivered the morning of your wedding. Hair and makeup artists can arrive at any time, and the space is a photographer’s dream, soft light, beautiful décor, and plenty of room for those “morning of the wedding” shots.
The breakfast room for the morning after is simply historic, Tudor‑style wood panelling, intricate carvings around the fireplace, and that old world charm that makes you feel like you’re dining in a heritage manor. Breakfast is served between 07:30 and 09:30, perfect for early birds and slow risers alike.

The Wedding Breakfast Setup
Seeing the ceremony room set up for a wedding breakfast was breathtaking. The main window behind the top table was draped in soft white fabric, glowing gently against the chandelier. It created a magnificent, romantic focal point.
Lu Lu Blooms provided the florals for the day and it was an outstanding mix of colours and textures that felt like stepping into an English cottage garden. The scent was heavenly, and the arrangements were lush, natural, and utterly romantic. I stopped to chat with Lucie who was incredibly helpful and knew everything there is to know about flowers and weddings. Her artistic flare really shone through with all her pieces of work. Accommodation
Rowton Castle has 19 bedrooms, all available for the wedding night. Check‑in is from 1pm, and breakfast is included. Each room has its own character, four‑poster beds, intricate wallpaper, window seats, high ceilings, and that unmistakable English heritage charm. Every guest would feel like they were getting a little treat by staying here.

My experience at Rowton Castle was nothing short of wonderful. It’s a venue that blends heritage, exclusivity, and romance effortlessly. The staff care deeply, the details matter, and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else. It’s calm, nature filled, historic, and beautifully curated.
If I were looking to get married again, Rowton Castle would be at the very top of my list.
