Hiraeth, Llanidloes: A Cosy Coffee Shop with a Story

 There’s something special about stepping into a building that’s been part of a town for over a century. Hiraeth sits inside what was once an old butcher’s shop, first running in 1894, and you can still feel that sense of history in the place, solid walls and old charm.

But today, instead of hanging cuts of meat, the counters are lined with beautifully oversized cakes, artisan coffees, and the warm hum of people settling in for something delicious.

Coffee & Cakes That Feel Like a Treat

The cake counter is impossible to ignore, tall, generous slices that look like they’ve been baked with love rather than precision. I went for the elderflower and lemon cake, and it was everything you want from a spring summer bake: fragrant, light, and bright with citrus. Paired with a smooth coffee, it’s the kind of combination that makes you linger a little longer than planned.

Proper Homemade Pizza (The Kind You Remember)

Hiraeth’s pizzas are the real deal, stone baked and unapologetically homemade. I ordered the Clucking Delicious pizza from their menu, and it lived up to its name. Pesto chicken, chorizo, olives (although I requested without), red peppers, mozzarella… every bite was flavourful, and perfectly balanced.

With a cold Somersby cider on the side, it was one of those meals that makes you instantly decide you’ll be coming back.

One of the loveliest touches is that Hiraeth doubles as a tiny lifestyle shop. While waiting for your food, you can browse:
